UTM Brands Chakwera’s PA Chikumbutso Mtumodzi Murderer, Rapist, Son Of Killer
….. he killed Kalonga Stambuli
…..attempted to rape step mother
…..his father was killing people in MCP govt.
First things first. Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has a new friend in town. His name is Chikumbutso Mtumodzi. This is Chakwera’s right hand man. All the major decisions that the MCP president has been making are coming from Mtumodzi.
If members of the MCP, thus ordinary or even the inner circle are wondering some of the decisions being taken by their president, there you have it, these decisions are being sanctioned by one Chikumbutso Mtumodzi.
But who is Chikumbutso Mtumodzi?
Chikumbutso Mtumodzi is a trained journalist, just like many of us but he has a dark side which he has over the years, tried to hide.
But we will lay it bare for all to see and confirm.
Chikumbutso is son to the most feared man in the original MCP government, Mr. B.B Mtumodzi.
Mr. B.B Mtumodzi was a member of the notorious ‘Special Branch’ of the Malawi Police Force.
Mr. B.B Mtumodzi was killing people during the one party regime.
He is retired and lives peacefully at his home in Lilongwe’s area 25 township.
Former MCP President John Tembo knows Mr. B.B Mtumodzi very well.
Former President Bakili Muluzi also knows Mr. B.B Mtumodzi very well and that is why he never touched his son, Chikumbutso Mtumodzi when he was a rookie reporter at Blantyre Newspapers Limited, publishers of the Daily Times and Malawi News in the late 90s.
Mr. B.B Mtumodzi has always protected his son Chikumbutso Mtumodzi from politicians and all those who know him, play it safe by not getting in his way, that is how Chikumbutso Mtumodzi survived jail during Muluzi’s time as President and got into good books when Bingu Mutharika became President.
Attempted rape of Step Mother
There was a time that Chikumbutso and his father fell apart.
They did not talk for years. Reason; Chikumbutso attempted to rape his ‘step mother’.
His biological mother died and Mr. B.B Mtumodzi remarried and this is the woman that Chikumbutso attempted to rape.
Chikumbutso knew that his father Mr. B.B Mtumodzi is a very dangerous man and he kept away for some time until after some family members resolved the issue.
Dr Kalonga Stambuli’s death
Dr Kalonga Stambuli, former Chief Economic Adviser to the then President Bakili Muluzi, was killed on December 29, 2003.
He was poisoned with an organophosphate compound and, immediately after, strangled.
Declaring Asphyxia due to manual strangulation as the immediate cause of death, an investigative report concluded that the death was unlikely to have been suicidal.
A hand written note was found beside Stambuli’s body and read, “You are very sinful”.
This was the work of Chikumbutso Mtumodzi.
Let us understand how the late Dr Kalonga Precious Stambuli got entangled in the corrupt dealings of Dr Muluzi before the services of one Chikumbutso Mtumodzi were sought to ‘deal with this problem’.
Writer Adamson Muula writes in his article ‘Dealing with corruption in Nyasaland’ published in The Nation on 9th February 2014.
“When we move to the United Democratic Front (UDF), many people are less generous in terms of how corruption was embraced.
Fairly or unfairly, the vice (corruption) is said to have been perfected in the UDF era.
If people do question whether Cashgate started under Joyce Banda or under President Bakili Muluzi, one may have to just look at the Kalonga Stambuli case when he was incarcerated at Chichiri Prison by the Bakili Muluzi presidency.
My story is not being told for the first time.
Kalonga’s problem was that he was being accused of having embezzled government money. How had he done that?
There was money from a foreign government to the Ministry of Water Development. This money was then deposited in the defunct Finance Bank instead of being kept by the Reserve Bank.
Kalonga was the sole signatory of this account and once in a while, the ruling group would request to dip into this pot for personal and party reasons.
Lo and behold, at some point the leadership understood that Kalonga had also been dipping his hand into the cookie jar without permission.
So they decided enough was enough and Kalonga had to pay for his curiosity.
So he was arrested and charged with some crime bordering on theft by public servant.
Kalonga argued the arrest was politically motivated. In any case, he challenged to be brought before a court of law so that he be accorded the opportunity to spill the beans.
He asked rhetorical questions. How come government had opened a bank account at Finance Bank? How come the account from which he was being accused of having abused had only one signatory, i.e. himself?
Where had some of the money (apart from that which he was being accused of having stolen) gone to? As far as Kalonga was concerned, a reasonable person would see the money trail entering the gates of Sanjika.
When I heard the story that Kalonga was telling about the leadership of this country, I did not believe it fully.
Be he reassured me: you will see what happens to this case. Then I saw what happened to this case. The case was dropped and Kalonga Stambuli walked free and left for Europe.”
Then somehow, Kalonga Stambuli found himself back in Malawi again and back in the good old hands of Muluzi again.
This time, Muluzi had gotten so rich, he wanted to start his own bank, the Trade and Investments Bank and who would be a better man to lead the bank than Kalonga Stambuli? Keep your enemies closer.
When all was rosy, thought the unsuspecting Kalonga Stambuli, Muluzi had secretly engaged the services of one Chikumbutso Mtumodzi to ‘sort out this issue with Kalonga Stambuli’.
And Chikumbutso Mtumodzi did sort out the problem for Muluzi.
Chikumbutso Mtumodzi knew Kalonga Stambuli had a weakness when it came to the bottle, so he trailed him that Christmas weekend and Stambuli, unknowingly, made Chikumbutso Mtumodzi follow him up to Zomba in various drinking joints.
Chikumbutso Mtumodzi finally managed to slip the poison in Stambuli’s drink at Gogo Kalonga on the Zomba Road and knew how many hours it would take for the poison to start working and his boys were lurking at Stambuli’s house in Blantyre to do the strangulation to make the death look like was from manual strangulation.
In the second part of our series of unpacking the new found friendship of Chakwera, we will tell of another story where Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, without remorse, stubbed a husband of a woman he was having an affair with in the eye.
We will also tell a story on how he started using drugs, faking academic certificates and also how he betrayed someone who had kept him in his house when he had nowhere to go by planting ballot papers in his house before calling the police to pounce on his good Samaritan.
