Ministry Of Finance Corrects Misinformation On 2019 Elections Budget By Nations Newspaper
The front Page Story of the Nation Newspaper of Wednesday, 23rd May 2018 is quoting the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson as saying The Electoral body has an election budget deficit of K7.5 billion and that government has committed to provide about 85 percent of the budget for the Tripartite Elections.
The truth of the matter is that The Malawi Electoral Commission as per January 2018 submission to Government on the 2019 Tripartite Election Electoral cycle budget, submitted to Treasury a budget of a Grand Total of K41.8 billion for the elections.
Considering that an election is a process involving many activities, Treasury has in the current financial year allocated a total of K10.1 billion to cover for early preparatory activities in readiness for the 2019 Tripartite Elections.
In line with the total budget submitted by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to Government, in the 2018/19 budget, Treasury has allocated K31.5 billion and the remaining amount to be allocated in 2019/2020 as submitted by Commissions cashflow meeting the grand total of K41.8 billion as submitted by the Commission.
Government therefore wishes to assure all Election Stakeholders and the general public that it is committed to ensure that the electoral body is fully financially supported to conduct an election without financial hurdles affecting the planned electoral calendar and processes.
As the Honourable Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development presented in the National Assembly in the 2018/19 Budget Statement, Treasury wishes to reiterate that Malawi for the first time will finance its election one hundred percent.
Government recognizes that elections are an integral tenet to democracy and it will fully support MEC towards conducting a free, fair and credible election.
